Shining Cliff Woodland, Ambergate, Derbyshire

On the west bank of the river Derwent near Ambergate is Shining Cliff Wood, a beautiful dense ancient hunting forest with a wide variety of wildlife, trees, plants and fungi. The changing of both species and terrain as you move through this woodland allows for a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself amongst nature and hone your observational skills regarding resources and what the local environment has to offer.

Course Meeting Point Location

Tannenbaum Campsite

Tannenbaum campsite is located just outside of Belper and is in close proximity to Shining Cliff Woodland. The people running the campsite are very friendly and accommodating having a great set up with fantastic views and facilities for campers including toilets/showers, a tuck shop, bar and hot drinks. If attending a course and you are not from the local area this would be a great place to camp the night before. There are pubs, petrol stations and shops within a 5-10 minute drive from the campsite.

Arriving at the campsite you will be greeted by the instructor who will direct you as to where to park your transport. All vehicles will be left at the campsite in a designated area for the day, the woodland basecamp is a 30 minute walk away so a relatively good level of fitness is required. The group will walk 10 minutes along a country lane before joining onto a woodland trail for the remainder until reaching basecamp. All attending the course should be wearing suitable sturdy outdoor footwear.
